The Watchers

Caleb climbed up on a stack of crates to examine some wooden cartons near the ceiling. Some were smaller, but some were very large. On the back side of one large wooden crate, he could see familiar characters printed in Aramaic. Then he saw another crate. As his gaze swept the area, he could see many, many crates. All labeled the same: “War trophies from Judah Relics from Zedekiah’s temple, Temple treasures from Jerusalem.”

“Hey, Tamzi Come up here” he called. “You’ve got to see this!”

All the Jews were talking about it—Jeremiah’s 70-year prophecy. Some thought it would be fulfilled; others thought that God had abandoned His people once and for all. And now, Caleb and his Babylonian friend, Tamzi, had discovered something important–something really important. Caleb was certain of that, but who could confirm his suspicions?

The Watchers follows Caleb, Tamzi, their families, Allamu the blind beggar, and the old prophet Daniel, as before their very eyes the mighty kingdom of Babylon is overthrown by Cyrus and his Medo-Persian army. Was this the beginning of the end for the Babylonian Jews or the sign of a new beginning? God would keep His promise—Caleb was sure of it!

“For thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place” (Jeremiah 29:10 NKJV).
